Family for Life

Choosing to seek addiction treatment is only the first step on your journey to sobriety. Detox services, comprehensive therapy, and other holistic support services are essential to helping you achieve sobriety. During therapy, you will learn about the roots of your addiction and how to manage addictive behaviors better. You will also learn and practice new, safer coping mechanisms to use when faced with triggers. All of the skills you take away from an addiction treatment program are meant to help prevent future relapse and ensure better opportunities for maintaining long-term recovery. All treatment programs strive to provide individualized programs designed to help you achieve your treatment needs and goals; however, what happens after completing treatment?

A crucial part of treatment is aftercare. Recovery is a lifelong process. Our alumni program here at Inneractions is a huge part of our program. We consider our alumni part of our community forever. Once you complete treatment at Inneractions, we encourage you to continue to stay connected through our monthly newsletter, sober anniversary celebrations, alumni meetings and events, and more!

Alumni Programs vs. Aftercare Programs

As you prepare to discharge from your addiction treatment program, you will work with your treatment team to create an aftercare plan. Aftercare (sometimes referred to as continuing care) occurs immediately after the completion of your treatment program. You will still participate in continued therapy, medical appointments, and group therapy or support groups during aftercare. Most aftercare programs begin immediately after treatment as a “step-down” period between the highly supportive environment of inpatient treatment and returning to your home environment. Another part of aftercare often includes opportunities to stay in a sober living environment, assistance with employment, and help with educational needs such as GED and continuing education applications.

Alumni programs are different from aftercare in many ways. Although both occur after the end of your treatment program and both are vital aspects of your ongoing recovery, each provides various benefits. Most alumni programs do not include regularly scheduled therapy and or other appointments related to ongoing treatment. Participation in alumni events is entirely voluntary. Events and peer support meetings provide you an opportunity to continue interacting with like-minded peers who influenced you during and after treatment. Also, alumni events offer a safe and sober outlet to participate in fun and exciting events where the potential for triggers is vastly reduced as everyone shares the same sobriety goals.

How Alumni Programs Help You Stay Sober

Alumni programs are a vital element of recovery for millions of people after addiction treatment. Our Woodland Hills alumni program helps our program graduates successfully transition back to their day-to-day responsibilities after treatment has ended. The goal of an alumni program is to help you continue living in sobriety without feeling isolated and “alone” as you leave a supported treatment setting. Participation in our alumni program allows you to continue learning and practicing skills learned in treatment to help reduce the possibility of relapse after treatment.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as many as sixty percent of people who complete an addiction treatment program experience at least one incidence of relapse. Participating in an alumni program can help you avoid this all-too-common part of recovery and keep you motivated to continue your new healthy, sober lifestyle.

Isolation is one of the main factors that lead to relapse during the early stages of recovery. The support and interaction of an alumni program help to keep you connected with staff and peers you formed relationships with during your treatment. This reduces feelings of isolation and separation recovering addicts often experience as they actively try to protect their sobriety by distancing themselves from triggering situations or people. Alumni program members meet regularly throughout the year. This frequent peer interaction helps keep you active in your community and engaged with a group of like-minded peers who share similar recovery goals.

Many people who participate in an alumni program are the same people who had a positive and significant impact on your recovery during your rehab program. Therefore, maintaining these positive relationships can provide a source of support during challenging times. They also offer an outlet to share successes and struggles with someone who is walking or has walked a similar path. Another difference between aftercare and alumni programs is duration. Most aftercare programs last for a finite amount of time. Once the program reaches its “end date,” participants are no longer required to participate in regular therapy and other scheduled appointments. Alumni programs at Inneractions are available for as long as you need or want to participate.

Alumni and aftercare programs are also similar in some ways. Many alumni programs provide access to ongoing therapy options, including 12-step support group meetings. Other events may include sober activities such as movie nights, potluck dinners, hikes, bike rides, bowling nights, etc. These events and many others provide a way for you to network with and maintain your relationships with sober peers. During events, you can talk about everyday struggles, experiences related to addiction and learn new ways to manage stress and other challenges.

Our Alumni Program

At Inneractions, our Woodland Hills alumni program and sober living community are parts of our drug rehab program. After completing your treatment program, we encourage all alumni to stay connected with fellow alumni. Many treatment facilities offer alumni programs and benefits, yet each is unique to the environment and location of the program. Our program consists of different ways to help alumni stay connected, including alumni meetings, remote outpatient care services, virtual and in-person alumni events, and a weekly alumni newsletter that enables you to stay up to date on upcoming alumni events, news, and stories from other Inneractions alumni. We also take the time to celebrate significant anniversaries, milestones, and accomplishments by our alumni. Although each person’s path to sobriety is unique, each is filled with remarkable and noteworthy achievements.

The alumni program at Inneractions in Woodland Hills, CA, is designed to help you stay motivated and excited about your recovery and sobriety while encouraging participation in sober activities. Interacting with other alumni through an alumni program can help you rebuild and solidify your independence and freedom from alcohol and drugs. Other alumni can provide a source of support during hard times. Many members of alumni groups remain connected long after treatment ends through email, exclusive member-only Facebook groups, and other online and in-person forums where you can interact and plan upcoming events and group outings.
